“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”

Salt has a deeper meaning than simply adding flavor to food.

In ancient days, salt was considered very valuable. In some places, it was even used as wages. Salt was also used as a preservative to protect food from decay.

Jesus says that we are the salt of the earth. He created us to be the salt of the earth. We carry an identity as children of God, and He has set a value upon each one of us—not the value set by humans, but the value established by the Kingdom of God. Jesus purchased that value for us upon the cross.

Just as salt enhances the flavor of food, God expects us to display His goodness and enrich the lives of others by positively influencing them, encouraging them, and bringing out the best in them for His glory.

Just as salt preserves food from decay, God calls us to preserve His nature within us. The Bible encourages us to guard our hearts and walk in integrity, holiness, and righteousness so that our lives are not corrupted by the influences of this world. God has placed us in our homes, workplaces, churches, and communities so that His truth, righteousness, and love may be preserved through our lives.

Jesus also gives us a solemn warning. When salt loses its usefulness, it is thrown out and trampled underfoot. In the same way, when we compromise the identity God has given us, our witness becomes ineffective—not only to the Kingdom of God but also to those around us who are watching our lives.

Theoretically, pure salt does not lose its saltiness; it becomes ineffective when mixed with impurities. Likewise, where we belong, where we remain, and what we allow into our lives all matter. Compromise slowly weakens our witness and causes us to drift away from who God created us to be.

Reclaim your identity in Christ. Add flavor to perishing souls. Influence those around you with the love, truth, and holiness of God so they may be preserved from spiritual decay. Retain the priceless redemption that Jesus purchased for you upon the cross. Do not allow the impurities of this world to weaken your witness or steal the purpose God has placed within you.

Remain close to Christ, because only by abiding in Him can we continue to be the salt He has called us to be.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us the salt of the earth. Thank You for giving us an identity that is rooted in Christ and for the priceless redemption You purchased for us through the cross. May we remain faithful and effective, firmly rooted in You, never drifting away from the purpose for which You created us. Help us to abide in You every day so that our lives will glorify Your name.
