“Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.”

A seed may appear small, but it carries life within it. Biologically, that life is called an embryo. By God’s divine design, a seed has the ability to grow, reproduce, and become fruitful. Some plants even flourish in harsh conditions because the life within the seed is stronger than the environment around it. In the same way, every Word that proceeds from God carries His divine life and has the power to transform the human heart.

Jesus used this parable to reveal that the Word of God is living and life-giving. Where there is life, there will be growth and reproduction. When the Word of God is planted in our hearts, God’s expectation is that the life within us will grow, bear fruit, and multiply.

Jesus also describes different conditions in which the seed failed to produce because it did not fall on the right soil or in a favorable environment. One of those conditions is when the seed fell among thorns. Although the seed carried life, it was choked by the thorns and could not reach its full potential. The problem was never with the seed; the problem was with the condition of the soil.

Later, Jesus explains that the thorns represent the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches, which choke the Word and make it unfruitful. Thorns can also represent distractions, misplaced priorities, and the unnecessary spending of our time, energy, and focus on things that do not help us grow spiritually. The life within us has a God-given purpose, and that life is nourished and strengthened through the Word of God. If we are not growing toward the purpose ordained by God, it is time to examine the thorns and thistles that may be choking our spiritual growth.

Let us be vigilant and guard our hearts so that the Word of God may grow freely within us. Remove every choking factor that hinders our spiritual maturity. Cut away the thorns that restrict growth, and allow God to water the seed He has planted in us. God did not plant His Word in us merely for survival but for multiplication. As a healthy tree bears fruit, and its fruit carries more seed, may our lives also bear lasting fruit that glorifies God and becomes a source of blessing, strength, and shade for those around us.

Heavenly Father, thank You for planting the living seed of Your Word in our hearts. Water us daily by Your Spirit, strengthen our faith, and help us to multiply the life You have placed within us for the glory of Your Kingdom. May our lives become a blessing, a refuge, and a testimony of Your goodness to everyone around us. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
