“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.”
Psalm 118:8–9 (NLT)

A man of valor, a mighty king, and one of the most influential men in history, David gives us this timeless advice: it is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people.

David had been in the spotlight from a very young age. His fame spread far beyond the borders of Israel as the young giant slayer. Yet, despite all his victories and recognition, his journey was filled with trials and disappointments. Through every season, God remained his only refuge.

His own father did not speak highly of him. His brothers discouraged and rejected him. King Saul, whom he served faithfully, tried to kill him. His wife eventually turned against him. His own son rebelled against him, and even his closest companions abandoned him. Yet, in every circumstance, David’s refuge was never in his family, his palace, his army, or his position. His refuge was always in the presence of God.

David never lost anything by trusting in God. Instead, he gained everything by making the Lord his refuge.

The many challenges he faced throughout his life only confirmed this truth: it is far better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in people or princes.

The world often encourages us to place our confidence in influential people, powerful leaders, wealth, or human connections. But the Word of God reminds us that our greatest security is found in the Lord alone. He alone is fully concerned for the welfare and well-being of His people.

Apart from God, everyone else can only be a companion for a season in our life’s journey. People have limitations. They can only walk with us for so long. But God knows us completely. He knows our past, our present, and our future. He promises never to leave us nor forsake us, and He will faithfully carry us to the very end.

He alone is worthy of our complete trust.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our refuge and our unfailing strength. Forgive us for the times we have placed our confidence in people more than in You. Teach us to trust You with all our hearts, knowing that You alone are faithful and unchanging. Help us to find our security in Your presence rather than in human strength or worldly influence. Lead us through every season of life, and carry us safely to the end according to Your perfect will. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
