“I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron:”
Isaiah 45:2 (KJV)
King Cyrus of Persia is one of the most remarkable kings mentioned in the Bible. Among all the mighty men who worshiped Yahweh as their God, the Lord chose this pagan king to liberate the Jewish people from their seventy years of Babylonian captivity and to commission the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple.
What makes this even more astonishing is that God revealed Cyrus by name approximately 150 to 200 years before he was even born. This displays the absolute sovereignty of Almighty God. He holds history in His hands and already knows the future before it unfolds. Nothing catches Him by surprise.
This word came to King Cyrus before he conquered the mighty and seemingly unshakable kingdom of Babylon. God assured him that He would go before him, make the crooked places straight, level every obstacle, break the gates of bronze, cut through the bars of iron, and remove every barrier that stood in the way of accomplishing His purpose.
Although King Cyrus was a powerful ruler, he was not powerful enough to defeat Babylon by his own strength. His victory came because God went before him. The Lord took care of what needed to be taken care of, opened the doors that needed to be opened, and brought down everything that had to be brought low. God used a pagan king to overthrow one of the greatest empires of that time in order to bring freedom to His covenant people.
This reminds us that the plans and purposes of God always prevail. God did not allow His people to enter captivity without already preparing a plan for their deliverance. Their help came from the most unexpected place, yet God’s purpose was perfectly fulfilled.
This word brings great encouragement to us. God goes before us. He deals with the challenges, obstacles, and situations that lie ahead and makes the path straight so that we can walk freely in His perfect plan. The Babylons in our lives are God’s responsibility to deal with. Our responsibility, as children of God, is to be ready to embrace and walk in His purpose.
Our Heavenly Father never allows a situation without already having a solution. Before we even begin our journey, He has already gone ahead of us, preparing the way. We may not always see His hand at work, but we can trust His heart, knowing that the God who leads us is also the God who goes before us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the God who goes before us. Thank You that You know our future and have already prepared the way according to Your perfect will. Give us the faith to trust Your leading and the courage to walk in the path You have prepared for us. Let every crooked place be made straight, every closed door be opened according to Your will, and every plan You have ordained for our lives come to pass for Your glory. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
