“But God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. And the people of Israel went up out of the land of Egypt equipped for battle.”
Exodus 13:18 (ESV)

Not every wilderness is a setback. Some wilderness seasons are designed by God to equip us for battle.

God instructed Moses to lead the people out of Egypt to the Promised Land through the wilderness, taking the longer route instead of the shortest path through the land of the Philistines, which would have taken only a few days.

God deliberately rerouted them for a purpose. He knew that if the newly freed slaves faced war immediately, they would become terrified, discouraged, and long to return to Egypt.

God does not always lead us through the wilderness, nor does He always lead us straight into the battlefield. He leads according to His perfect timing and purpose. The wilderness journey not only displayed the glory and faithfulness of God but also equipped His people with the courage, endurance, and strength they would need for the battles ahead.

In the wilderness, the Israelites learned to depend on God for everything—food, water, health, protection, and every necessity of life. It was necessary for them to learn this first before facing even the smallest of battles.

In the eyes of God, the enemies were never the greatest challenge. His greater concern was to train His people to trust His promises, honor Him, and acknowledge Him in every situation. The Almighty is concerned about both our journey and our destiny because He uses the journey to prepare us for the destiny. Our journey can be corrected along the way when we seek God for help, but our destiny is fulfilled only when we continue to walk in obedience to His leading.

Even in the wilderness, the presence of Yahweh goes with us—a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. No threatening circumstance, no seasonal serpent, no difficult path, and no hopeless situation can prevent us from entering the Promised Land when God is leading us.

Do not worry too much about the journey. Focus on the One who will be with you throughout the journey.

You may begin your journey in the wilderness, but when you come out, you will be equipped with God’s strength and established in His wisdom for the greater battles ahead.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that every wilderness season has a purpose in Your perfect plan. Thank You that Your presence never leaves us, even in the wilderness. May we walk in obedience to Your leading until we enter every promise You have prepared for us. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
