“The Lord said to him, ‘What is that in your hand?’ He said, ‘A staff.’”
Exodus 4:2 ESV
God wants to use what He has already placed in your hand.
God called Moses while he was still a shepherd. Along the way, while tending sheep, he had picked up a staff—an ordinary staff, just like every other shepherd carried.
Moses was not a very confident man when God called him to do His work. He gave excuse after excuse to avoid the assignment God had given him. Yet the will of the Father did not change, even when Moses briefly resisted.
Moses went into the task field with his stammering mouth and his rugged old staff. When the time came to display His glory, God chose to use what was already in Moses’ hand rather than provide a royal rod from Pharaoh’s palace, decorated and displayed for prestige.
Moses’ personal wooden shepherd’s staff was used to enact plagues, part the Red Sea, strike the rock for water, and be lifted up in battle as Israel prevailed. God did not place a powerful rod into Moses’ hand; instead, He transformed what Moses already had into a powerful instrument for His glory.
What is in your hand?
God sees every one of us as a vessel for His use. He has bestowed upon you a gift, a talent, a calling, and a purpose for His kingdom. You may think you are incapable of what you have been called to do. Moses thought the same. Yet Moses obeyed with what was already in his hand. It was just a stick in Moses’ eyes, but God used that rod to perform miracles.
Today, God reminds you of the gift, the task, the desire, and the plan He has placed within you. Put it to use and watch God do great things for His kingdom and for His glory. Moses could have gone to the grave as a shepherd carrying an ordinary staff, but he chose to obey God and became a leader, a liberator, and a man who changed the history of God’s people.
When you surrender what is in your hand to God, He will use it to display His glory.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for placing gifts, talents, and purpose in our lives. Help us to faithfully use what You have already placed in our hands. Take our ordinary abilities and use them for Your extraordinary purposes. May our lives bring glory to Your name and advance Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
