““Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.”
‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭19‬:‭31‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Saul, the first ever king of Israel, was chosen and anointed by God.

Saul was very successful until his morals started to decline. A series of disobedience, jealousy, hatred, and paranoia led to his downfall from the throne. God rejected him as king and refused to hear his prayers.

When Saul could not hear the voice of God before going up against the battle, he consulted a medium. This became his final act of unfaithfulness. Instead of turning his heart back to God in repentance, Saul looked for direction from another source.

God delivered the ultimate punishment. The Lord handed Saul and the army of Israel over to the Philistines. Saul and his three sons were killed the very next day. The kingdom was completely taken from Saul’s lineage and given to David. This ultimate fate came because Saul broke faith with the Lord, seeking guidance elsewhere instead of truly inquiring of the Lord.

The Bible strictly prohibits consulting mediums, necromancers, and spiritists. Scripture views these practices as a spiritual defilement, an “abomination” to God, and a fundamental failure to trust in God for guidance and truth.

When God seems silent, it is not the time to run to other voices. It is the time to humble ourselves, repent, wait, and seek Him with a sincere heart. There is no alternative to the voice of God. The wrong source of guidance may offer temporary answers, but it can lead to permanent consequences. Saul’s life is a reminder that seeking direction apart from God can cost far more than we ever imagined—even our very life.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to keep our hearts faithful before You. Teach us to seek You alone for guidance and to wait on You even when we do not hear Your voice immediately. Keep us surrendered until the end, so our lives may finish well and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
