“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
— 1 John 1:9 (ESV)
Sin is the number one reason our relationship with God becomes distant. The Bible says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). It also says that if anyone claims they have not sinned, they deceive themselves and make God out to be a liar (1 John 1:8–10).
David wrote that we were conceived in sin (Psalm 51:5). According to God’s Word, even the holiest saint living in this world has sinned. The only way to maintain a constant relationship with the Father is through a heart of genuine repentance.
The Father’s forgiveness does not always make sense to human wisdom, but His reckless love reaches beyond every boundary and limitation. A sinful person with a humble, repentant heart is far better than someone who appears righteous but carries a proud heart.
The thief hanging beside Jesus was there because of his own sins. According to the law, he deserved his punishment. Yet the love of Jesus reached him. In his final moments, the thief turned to Christ with a repentant heart, and Jesus promised that he would be with Him in paradise (Luke 23:39–43).
No one is too far gone as long as their heart still responds to the conviction of the Holy Spirit. God gives conviction to liberate us from the claws of sin (John 16:8), whereas the devil uses sin to lead us further into bondage. The blood of Jesus Christ has the power to break every chain of sin, giving us not only eternal life but also a life of freedom here on earth (Hebrews 9:14).
It is not your job to measure the depth, severity, or intensity of your sins but to embrace the depth, width, length, and height of the love of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 3:18–19).
You and I should strive to live in righteousness, but we will never attain the perfect righteousness that God requires on our own. The righteousness that is approved by the Heavenly Father is the righteousness of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 3:9).
Bring your scarlet sins to Jesus, and He will wash you white as snow (Isaiah 1:18). He alone can clothe you with the holiness that God desires.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing love and amazing grace. I confess my sins before You and ask You to cleanse me through the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Create in me a humble and repentant heart that is always sensitive to the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Thank You for forgiving me, restoring me, and clothing me with Your righteousness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
