“Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.”
Revelation 21:3 ESV
Thousands of people from different faiths travel across cities, borders, and nations on religious pilgrimages to worship their gods in temples and sanctuaries. We often see devotees enduring great hardship, being crushed in crowds or even mortifying their physical bodies, just to catch a sacred glimpse of idols, believing that their god dwells in that place.
The Bible, however, says that the dwelling place of God is with man. He loves to be with us, close to us, and within us. Jesus Christ, our Immanuel—God with us—is the greatest evidence that God came in the flesh to physically dwell among mankind.
Many years ago, I lived in one of the coldest places. During winter, the skin on my hands would dry out so badly, especially after washing dishes with soap. Every winter my hands would crack until they bled. The skin over my knuckles became dark and scarred. It was one of the loneliest seasons of my life. I felt helpless, and washing dishes in warm water only made my condition worse.
One night, overwhelmed by the pain, I cried out to God. I prayed, “Lord, if only I had a loved one beside me, I would not have to go through this pain.” Then I called upon Jesus for help.
That night, in the middle of my deep sleep, I felt someone gently touching and rubbing my hands. The touch was so real that I became fully aware of it and woke up to see what was happening. The glorious presence of God filled the room. To my great surprise, the hands that were always bleeding and scarred began to heal. The scars disappeared and never returned. I can boldly testify that I have never experienced that painful condition again for the past thirteen years.
That night, God reminded me that He is not a distant God to be searched for, but a loving Father who comes near when His children call.
God truly desires to dwell among us. He responds as quickly as we call upon Him. He is only a whisper away. But the question is, is our place fit for God to dwell?
Jesus Christ will not share the throne of our hearts with anything we exalt above Him. As much as God desires to dwell among us, He does not continue to dwell where He is dishonored, disrespected, or continually ignored.
God is not looking for a sophisticated place to dwell, but for a humble heart and a fervent seeker of His presence. He is not a guest to be accommodated only when we need Him. Rather, He desires to be a permanent resident of our lives, sharing every part of our journey and walking with us in our day-to-day lives.
Prepare your heart. Make room for His presence, for God delights to dwell with those who seek Him.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for desiring to dwell with us. What a privilege it is that the Creator of heaven and earth chooses to make His home in our hearts. Help us to love You above everything else and to walk with You every day. May our hearts always be a place where You delight to dwell. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
