“And the Lord said, ‘Go up, for tomorrow I will give them into your hand.’”
— Judges 20:28 (ESV)
Some battles are worth fighting when we have God’s approval. Our God is a just God, and He stands for righteousness and justice. There is no true defeat when we stand on the side of God’s truth.
The story in this passage is between fellow brothers. The tribe of Benjamin committed an atrocious sin, and the people of Israel were outraged by the wickedness that had taken place. They went up against the Benjaminites, but their first attempt ended in defeat. Instead of giving up, they sought the Lord through prayer, fasting, and repentance. Then the Lord spoke to them and said, “Go up against them.”
The Israelites were fighting against skilled warriors and mighty men of valor. In numbers, strength, and military ability, the Benjaminites appeared to have the upper hand. Yet God was against them because of their sin.
The Israelites may have been less skillful, but they had God on their side and, even more importantly, they had His approval to fight that battle. Whichever side God takes is the side of victory. The mightiest warriors were defeated in great numbers because of the sins they refused to turn away from.
This reminds us of the battles we all face in life—a battle for truth, a battle for justice, and a battle against sin. At times, repeated defeats can bring discouragement and make us feel like giving up. Yet the Bible encourages us to strengthen ourselves through prayer and fasting and to seek the Lord for His help and direction.
Our God is a God of justice and truth. Anything that stands against His righteousness will ultimately face His judgment. When God fights for you, even the most effective, magnificent, and powerful opponent cannot prevail. As you keep God at your side and walk in obedience to Him, victory is assured.
The enemy may appear strong today, but his defeat is already in sight. Victory will be your portion, and all the glory will belong to our Almighty God.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God of justice and truth. Help me to fight only the battles You have called me to fight. Strengthen me through prayer, fasting, and obedience to Your Word. Go before me, fight on my behalf, and let Your name be glorified in every area of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
