“At a lodging place on the way the Lord met him and sought to put him to death. Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son’s foreskin and touched Moses’ feet with it and said, “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me!” So he let him alone. It was then that she said, “A bridegroom of blood,” because of the circumcision.”
Exodus 4:24-26 ESV
Blood is everything. Blood is life.
Without the shedding of blood, there is no redemption. Hebrews 9:22 (ESV)
Although God chose Moses to lead the nation of Israel, Moses had a past that needed redemption. While he was in Egypt, he killed an Egyptian in defense of his fellow Israelite. Fearing the consequences, he fled to the land of Midian.
The calling of God requires redemption and the forgiveness of sin, and that is attained only through the blood. The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. Later, as Moses was returning to Egypt to fulfill God’s calling, the Lord confronted him on the way (Exodus 4:24–26). Many Bible scholars understand this encounter as being connected to Moses’ failure to keep the covenant of circumcision that God had established with Abraham.
Moses had neglected to circumcise his son according to the covenant. Zipporah, Moses’ wife, responded immediately. She circumcised their son, took the foreskin, and touched Moses’ feet with it, saying, “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me.” Because of the blood of the covenant, the Lord spared Moses’ life.
The blood of the covenant in the Old Testament pointed forward to the perfect and eternal redemption that would come through the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
Even today, the Lord requires circumcision—not the cutting away of the flesh, but the circumcision of our hearts through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit” (Romans 2:29, ESV).
The only blood that is acceptable before the Father is the precious blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. Through His blood we are redeemed, our sins are forgiven, and we reclaim our relationship with God, our identity as His children, and the authority He has given us in Christ.
Our lives are not only spared; they are restored for a new beginning.
Moses’ life experienced a divine breakthrough that changed the course of history. The blood of Jesus does not merely spare our lives—it transforms them, restores them, and prepares us to fulfill God’s purpose. Just as Moses fulfilled God’s calling through His mercy, so will you through the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the precious blood of Jesus Christ that was shed for our redemption. Thank You that through His blood our sins are forgiven, our relationship with You is restored, and we are made new. Circumcise our hearts by Your Spirit and remove everything that hinders our walk with You. Let the power of the blood of Jesus bring forgiveness, restoration, breakthrough, and a new beginning in our lives. May we fulfill the purpose You have prepared for us, all for Your glory. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
