“Then go in and shut the door behind yourself and your sons and pour into all these vessels. And when one is full, set it aside.” So she went from him and shut the door behind herself and her sons. And as she poured, they brought the vessels to her.”
— 2 Kings 4:4–5 (ESV)
The Bible talks about open doors for opportunities, favor, blessings, and advancement. At the same time, the Bible also emphasizes that shut doors are equally important for blessings, protection, and breakthrough.
In this story, the prophet Elisha instructs a widow who was overwhelmed with debt. When he asked her what she had in the house, she responded that she had nothing except a jar of oil. She was instructed to borrow empty vessels from her neighbors, go into her house, shut the door behind herself and her sons, and pour the oil into all the vessels.
She obeyed. She shut the door, poured the oil into the vessels, and the oil continued to flow until every empty vessel was filled. She then sold the oil, paid her debts, and lived on the rest. The shut door alone did not produce the miracle; her obedience behind the shut door positioned her to receive God’s provision.
Some blessings are meant to remain behind closed doors until it is time for them to be revealed. When God works in our lives, there is often a season when we do not give everyone access to what He is doing. While godly counsel is valuable, not every voice needs access to the work of God in our lives.
Elisha was specific in instructing the widow to shut the door while she poured from one vessel to another. The noise and opinions from the outside could have distracted her from the instruction she had received from God.
Some things are between you and God—between your hand and the hand of God. In this miracle, God intended to bless the widow through her faith and obedience. External voices and unnecessary opinions were not part of God’s plan for that moment.
God often does His deepest work in private before displaying it in public.
This is a great reminder for us. When God is at work in your life, the very work of God does not always need to be publicized before its appointed time. While God is pouring out His blessing and multiplying His favor in your life, it may be wise to keep certain matters away from public access to avoid distraction and discouragement.
Not every shut door is a sign of rejection. Sometimes it is God’s way of preserving, protecting, preparing, and producing the blessing He has prepared for us.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the seasons in which You work quietly behind closed doors. Help us to trust Your process, walk in obedience, and remain focused on Your voice above every other voice. Give us wisdom to discern what should be shared and what should remain between us and You. Preserve, protect, and prepare us for all that You have planned. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
