“And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any mighty miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them.”
— Mark 6:5 (NLT)

Jesus Christ was raised in the small town of Nazareth. The people around Him saw Him as a carpenter’s son and a skilled carpenter, but they did not accept Him as the Son of God.

Jesus went around doing good, healing people, and manifesting the power of God. Yet the Scripture mentions that He could not perform many mighty miracles there, except for a few healings, because of their unbelief.

It was not that Jesus lacked the power to perform miracles; rather, the people were too cold to receive because of their familiarity with Him. They were unable to accept Him as the Messiah who had been prophesied by the prophets many years before. They were looking for someone more sophisticated, a Messiah who would come in an elite and royal manner. A Messiah born in a stable, with no outward appearance of greatness and no formal religious training in their eyes, was a hard truth for them to accept.

In spite of Jesus boldly declaring in the synagogue that He was the fulfillment of prophecy, the people became offended, angry, and even tried to kill Him. The very people who thought they knew Him so well rejected the greatest truth standing before them—Jesus Christ.

God is looking for a humble heart, a heart that receives the truth and believes the truth. The Bible teaches that when we believe, we will see the glory of God.

Familiarity can become a roadblock to God’s work in our lives. When we become overly familiar, we can begin to take God, His Word, and His promises for granted. What should inspire faith can start to seem ordinary. In a world that has advanced so much through progress, knowledge, and research, God is still looking for people who will humble themselves, receive His truth, and know Him personally.

Just as in those days when Jesus walked the earth healing the sick, delivering the oppressed, and raising the dead, He is still at work in the lives of those who believe in Him today. Unbelief is not always open rejection of God; sometimes it appears as doubt, fear, anxiety, skepticism, or relying only on what we can see and understand.

The reason we often panic, fear, and become anxious about our situations and sicknesses is because the enemy tries to blind and veil our faith in Jesus Christ. It is the grace of God that reveals truth and mysteries. As we seek Him through His Word and believe His promises, God strengthens our faith and removes unbelief. When faith rises, we become ready to witness His great and mighty works.

Do not let familiarity rob you of faith. The same Jesus who walked the streets of Nazareth healing the sick and setting people free is still working today in the lives of those who believe.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your truth through Jesus Christ. Remove every veil of unbelief, doubt, fear, and familiarity from our hearts. Give us humble hearts that receive Your Word with faith and expectation. Help us to trust You beyond what we see and understand. Strengthen our faith to believe that You are still the miracle-working God, and let us witness Your glory in our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
