“The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.”
— Proverbs 12:26 (NIV)
The Bible is a book of life and a teacher of life. From our relationship with God to our relationships with people, everything is taught in the Word of God.
Jesus is the perfect example of both, and His life simply showed us the way to follow. Jesus was loving and kind to everyone, yet He firmly set boundaries with people. Though He loved all people equally, He entrusted different levels of responsibility and access to different individuals. Out of all the people He loved, He chose only twelve disciples to walk closely with Him and spent much of His time investing in them. Jesus shared His ministry, revealed the mysteries of the Kingdom of God, and trained and taught those twelve. Yet, among them, there were only three disciples—Peter, James, and John—whom Jesus trusted as His inner circle.
These three disciples witnessed the transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain and saw a glimpse of His glory that was not revealed to everyone. These same three were with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane before He was taken away to be crucified. They were entrusted with some of the most significant moments of Jesus’ earthly ministry and later became key leaders and witnesses in the early church.
Humanly speaking, it is impossible to be equally close to everyone. By allowing these three men to see Him at His most vulnerable—when He was grieved and prayed in deep anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane—Jesus demonstrated the importance of having trusted companions during times of trial.
Not everyone will stay with us during difficult seasons. Not everyone is interested in our journey, and not everyone will rejoice in our destiny. Not everyone has the capacity to understand the vision God has placed in our hearts, which is why wisdom and discernment are necessary when sharing personal matters. Revealing our plans, dreams, and desires to the wrong people can sometimes bring discouragement, misunderstanding, and unnecessary opposition to our progress.
Moreover, it is biblical to allow only those into our inner circle who will encourage, empower, equip, and help us remain aligned with the plan and will of God. Just as Jesus prepared His closest disciples for greater responsibility in the Kingdom, God places certain people in our lives to strengthen us and help us fulfill His purpose.
Let us seek God’s guidance and discernment to identify wolves in sheep’s clothing among those we associate with. Let us also pray for courage and wisdom to organize our relationships and place people where they best fit in our journey with God.
When we do so, like Peter, James, and John, we will have trustworthy people around us who can be entrusted with responsibility. Even in our absence, they can carry forward what God has established through our lives, protect our reputation, and stand as pillars of strength in our personal and spiritual journey.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching us through the life of Jesus. Help us to love everyone as Christ loved, while also walking in wisdom concerning those we allow into our inner circle. Surround us with faithful people who will strengthen our faith, encourage our calling, and help us remain aligned with Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
