“Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me.”
Nehemiah 4:17-18 ESV
Nehemiah was rebuilding the breaches and broken gates of Jerusalem. As long as the breaches remained open and the gates stayed broken, leaving the city exposed to ruin and invasion, no one rose in opposition. But the moment the plan was laid out to close the breaches and rebuild the gates for the protection and restoration of the city, opposition arose from every corner.
The enemy is rarely disturbed by ruins, but restoration threatens the kingdom of darkness. The rebuilding of the walls meant security, separation, strength, and the re-establishment of God’s people. What was once broken was about to stand again, and the enemy could not tolerate it.
With God-given wisdom and courage, Nehemiah did not fall for deception or entertain the lies of the enemy. He and his people remained watchful and resisted every opposition. They were careful that the work of rebuilding would not stop under any circumstance. The builders worked with one hand while holding a weapon in the other. Each man had his sword strapped to his side, remaining alert at all times. In the end, they successfully restored the ruined walls.
This story reminds us that we are builders in the Kingdom of God. Life often moves comfortably when there are ruins and broken places left unattended in our spiritual walk. But the moment we decide to rebuild, pray, serve, restore, or pursue the purpose of God, opposition begins to rise like never before. Even close friends may turn against you, and people around you may oppose you without reason. Many times, it is not personally against you, but against the assignment and purpose of God upon your life.
The Bible teaches us to keep building and keep progressing in the work of God while holding the weapon — the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God — firmly around us to guard, strengthen, and encourage us. We are called to stay spiritually alert, not discouraged. The enemy may try to distract, delay, or weaken the work, but God strengthens those who remain faithful to the assignment He has given them.
Do not allow any man or enemy to breach your boundaries anymore. Stand firm in prayer, remain rooted in the Word of God, and continue building what God has entrusted to you. May your walls be restored, your borders secured, and your life established under the protection and blessing of the Lord.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to build Your Kingdom.. Let every broken wall in our lives be restored, and let no enemy breach the boundaries You have established for us. Keep us faithful to the assignment You have given us and lead us in victory through Your power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
