“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.”
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭5‬:‭20‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This is one of the Ten Commandments that God gave to Moses for the people of God. The Bible strongly condemns anyone who bears false witness. When a person stands as a witness, they stand not only before human judgment but also before the judgment of God. Every testimony is weighed and examined in His presence. We may deceive people around us with vicious words and convincing lies, but before God, even the smartest liar stands as a fool in His holy presence.

False witness may appear to gain a temporary victory, but God works on behalf of the victim to bring permanent destruction to the lie and the liar.

When King Ahab coveted Naboth’s vineyard, Naboth refused to sell the inheritance of his fathers. Queen Jezebel then hired two scoundrels to falsely accuse Naboth of cursing God and the king. Naboth was stoned to death because of false testimony, and Ahab seized the land. Yet the consequences of standing as false witnesses brought horrific judgment upon them, as recorded in the Bible. What looked like a permanent victory for the lie was only temporary, because the God of Heaven Himself stood as a witness for the truth.

The lie and the liar commit abomination before God by standing against the truth. As believers in Jesus Christ, the Word of God encourages us to stand for the truth and with the truth, even when it costs us something. It is far better to be condemned and hated by people for standing with truth than to stand guilty before the Heavenly Father. Stand on the right side. Stand with God.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to walk in truth and integrity before You. Guard our lips from falsehood, gossip, and deceit. Give us courage to stand for what is right, even when it is difficult or costly. Let our words honor You and bring justice, peace, and righteousness. Teach us to reflect the character of Christ in all that we say and do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
