“I will comfort you there in Jerusalem as a mother comforts her child.”
Isaiah 66:13 NLT
Out of all the crimes I hear about, a newborn being abandoned by its own mother deeply shakes my heart. The reason is that a woman goes through many hormonal, physical, and emotional changes during pregnancy, and delivering a child is another milestone altogether. For a mother to abandon her newborn is not easy, because even her body continues to remind her of the baby she carried within her.
The Bible says that even if a nursing mother fails to care for her child, God will comfort His children as a mother comforts. His love is so divine that even natural motherly affection cannot compare to it.
Jochebed, the mother of Moses, is one of the most courageous women in the Bible. During that time, the king of Egypt had commanded that every Hebrew boy two years old and younger be killed. Yet a mother’s courage, wisdom, and faith became the reason Moses lived.
She hid him carefully, protected him as long as she could, and when the time came, she placed him in a basket on the Nile River, trusting God with the life of her child. What must have looked painful and uncertain in human eyes became part of God’s greater plan.
Moses was later found by Pharaoh’s daughter, and God arranged everything so beautifully that Moses was nursed by his own mother while being raised in Pharaoh’s palace as Pharaoh’s son. He was named Moses because he was drawn out of the water.
God had a purpose for Moses from the very beginning. Although Jochebed had to let him go after he was weaned, God never left him. The Lord carried Moses through every stage of his life — from fleeing the palace, to living in the wilderness, to leading God’s people with strength and endurance.
It is a wonderful feeling to be a mother and to be loved by one. Yet for those who have never experienced either, life is not over in God’s eyes, even if the world sees it differently. God has a way of surrounding us with His love through unexpected people, places, and moments. He also uses us to become vessels of love and encouragement to others who are hurting and in need.
Jochebed fulfilled her role as a mother in Moses’ life, but it was God who truly held him, carried him, protected him, nurtured him, and strengthened him.
Our Heavenly Father is the God of Moses and also the God of us. Just as He was with Moses through every season of life, He will also be with us all the days of our lives.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing love and comfort. When human love falls short, Your presence remains constant. Carry us through every season of life, surround us with Your peace, and help us become vessels of Your love to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
