Praise the Lord! How joyful are those who fear the Lord and delight in obeying His commands. Their children will be successful everywhere; an entire generation of godly people will be blessed. They themselves will be blessed, and their good deeds will last forever.

Psalms 112:1-3 NLT

This passage may seem to carry two different emotions—fear and joy. But it is not a contradiction. The English translation does not fully express the depth of the word “fear” used here.

In Hebrew, the fear mentioned here is called Yirah. The trembling, nerve-wrenching fear of danger is called Pachad. These two are not the same.

Yirah is the fear we have before God. It is an elevated state of awe. It is a deep reverence. It is a holy astonishment. It is a heart that bows in honor and worship before Him. This fear draws us closer, not away.

And when we walk in Yirat Adonai—the fear of the Lord—and obey His commands, the blessings do not just come… they overflow. They overflow again and again. They overflow into our lives, and they overflow into the next generation.

Not only will we enjoy the blessings of the Lord, but the next generation will receive their portion. His goodness will be passed on from one generation to another. His faithfulness will be passed on from one generation to the next. His blessings will continue from generation to generation.

And above all, one generation shall praise the name of the Lord to another.

“One generation shall commend Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.” Psalm 145:4

The Bible calls us into a genuine worship—a worship of exaltation, a worship filled with honor, a worship filled with reverence, a worship that is shown through obedience to the commands of the Lord.

When Yirah fills our hearts, it begins to consume every Pachad. It replaces fear with peace. It replaces fear with joy. It replaces fear with a deep confidence in Him.

This holy fear brings blessings. It brings peace. It brings joy. It brings lasting prosperity—not only for us, but for our children, and for our children’s children.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, fill our hearts with Yirah, a deep awe and reverence for You. Let Your blessings overflow in our lives and into the generations after us. May our lives honor You, and may every generation after us declare Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
