“But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”
Jeremiah 29:7 ESV

There are people who are unhappy in the place where God has placed them. But where you are now is exactly where God wants you to be.
We may be in a place by our own choice or by force, yet still, you are where you are supposed to be according to the plan of God. Wherever we are, the Bible calls us to pray—for others, for leaders, and for nations. While our focus may often be on ourselves and our families, the truth is that the welfare of our family is deeply connected to the welfare of the place we live in.
In this season of unrest among nations, we can feel the weight of it in our daily lives—rising gas and oil prices, increasing grocery costs, and the strain it puts on our well-being. These pressures are real, but they are also reminders to turn our hearts toward God in prayer, not only for ourselves but for the places we are planted.
You are part of a society, and God can change a place—He can transform nations through even one person who is willing to carry a burden. One prayer, one petition, one surrendered heart can make a difference. Just as Nehemiah carried a burden for his people, his prayers led to restoration, rebuilding, and the renewal of what was once broken.
In this passage, God was instructing His people to pray for the welfare of the city. This was not a place they entered with joy, but a place of exile—a foreign land under unfamiliar leadership. Yet even there, God called them to seek its peace, to grow, and to multiply.
God reveals that in the welfare of the city lies the welfare of each individual. His plans for our lives are always to prosper us and not to harm us. Even in places that feel uncomfortable, uncertain, or undesired, the people of God will be sustained and blessed.
Therefore, pray for the place where you live—regardless of the people, the circumstances, or the conditions around you. Trust that you are not there by accident. Even when it feels like a place of discipline, God’s compassionate heart is still at work, redirecting all things for your welfare and for His greater purpose.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for placing me exactly where I am. Even when I do not understand, help me to trust Your perfect plan. Teach me to pray beyond myself—for my city, my leaders, and my nation. Give me a heart that carries Your burden and faith that believes You can bring transformation. Let Your peace rest upon the place I dwell, and let Your purpose be fulfilled in and through my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
