“Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.”
Proverbs 26:2 NLT

No one likes to be cursed, yet in the course of life we may face this unpleasant situation at least once. Fear often rises immediately when we hear such words, and they can linger in our thoughts, giving weight to what was spoken.
The truth is, no one can truly curse or bless apart from God. Anyone may speak words over another, but it is ultimately God who permits or rejects what is declared.
This scripture reveals a powerful truth: just as a wandering sparrow or a flying swallow does not settle in one place, so an undeserved curse will not rest on its intended target. A curse may be spoken, but it cannot take hold where there is no cause.
This truth is clearly seen in the account of the prophet Elisha and his servant Gehazi. Elisha healed Naaman, the commander of the army of Aram, from leprosy. In gratitude, Naaman returned to offer gifts, but Elisha refused them. Even when urged, the prophet remained firm, and Naaman departed in peace.
However, while Naaman was on his way back, Gehazi ran after his chariot and deceived him, saying that Elisha needed provisions for two young prophets who had just arrived. Naaman willingly gave more than what was asked. Yet nothing is hidden from God—Elisha knew what Gehazi had done.
Because of his greed and deceit, Elisha declared that the leprosy of Naaman would cling to Gehazi and his descendants. Immediately, Gehazi was afflicted. The consequence came upon him because there was a cause—his disobedience.
In another account, when King Balak sought to have Israel cursed without cause, he hired the sorcerer Balaam. Yet Balaam could not curse them and instead declared, “What the Lord has blessed, he cannot curse.” The one who came intending to curse ended up blessing, because God had already established His favor upon His people.
These examples make it clear: while words may be spoken, only God has the authority to allow them to take effect.
Therefore, be diligent to walk in obedience to God. Guard your heart against the lust of the flesh and the pride of life, so that you do not open the door to consequences. Walk in compassion toward the poor and needy, and act justly toward the widow and the fatherless, remaining under God’s covering.
At the same time, be assured that any empty or undeserved words spoken over your life or your family will not stand. Do not give fear a place in your heart because of words that carry no authority.
Above all, if you recognize that you have done wrong and sincerely repent, the blood of Jesus Christ is able to redeem you from every curse and release you from all judgment. In Him, there is restoration, freedom, and peace.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the sovereign authority over my life. Help me to walk in obedience, humility, and truth, so that I remain under Your covering. Guard my heart from fear and from every false word spoken against me. Search me, cleanse me, and lead me in righteousness. By the blood of Jesus, redeem me from every curse and fill me with Your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
