“And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you.”

Jeremiah 1:18–19 (ESV)

The prophet Jeremiah was called to deliver a critical message to the people of Judah. Yet he responded with hesitation, offering excuse after excuse to avoid the assignment God had given him. He focused on his weaknesses and insecurities, feeling incapable of carrying such a great calling. But none of these reasons changed God’s purpose.

Jeremiah is often known as the weeping prophet—his heart was tender, filled with deep love and sorrow for his people. Still, God sent him with a powerful promise: that He would make him like a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land.

This meant that despite resistance from every side—kings, officials, priests, and people—Jeremiah would stand firm. God Himself assured his protection, making him strong and unshakable. And as promised, God was with Jeremiah, guarding and sustaining him through it all.

Jeremiah’s calling is not just his story—it reflects how God works in our lives today.

Each one of us carries a calling from God—an assignment from heaven. Our excuses do not surprise or convince Him, because God knew us even before we were formed in our mother’s womb. Nothing about us is new to Him, and nothing takes Him by surprise.

Our calling may not always place us before leaders or crowds. Often, it is found in the life we live each day—in the places God leads us, the situations we face, and the people we are called to love and serve.

In this calling, God’s promise still stands: you will remain unshaken. Despite challenges, resistance, and overwhelming circumstances, you will stand strong. The assurance is not that there will be no battles, but that those who rise against you will not prevail—because God is with you.

He will deliver you.

So be reminded each day, especially when it feels difficult to face what lies ahead: you are on a mission from God. Stand firm, stand strong, and walk in the victory He has already promised. Do not let fear silence what God has called you to speak or live.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us with purpose and for being with us in every assignment You give. When we feel weak or unqualified, remind us that Your strength is made perfect in our weakness. Help us to trust Your promise that no resistance will prevail against us. Strengthen us to stand firm, walk boldly, and fulfill the calling You have placed upon our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
