“And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward.”
Isaiah 37:31 (ESV)

Recently, we had to cut down a couple of trees while redoing our landscape. Cutting down the tree was quick—it happened in just a few minutes. But uprooting it was a struggle for the contractor. Without using heavy machines, it required great physical effort.
As I watched, I wondered if that tree, once removed, could ever be planted again to grow and thrive. Even if we tried to replant it, the chances of survival would seem very low.
In a similar way, this image reflects what God’s people experienced. They were removed from the Promised Land—the very place God had blessed them with. It was a land of prosperity, where they lived under His presence and protection. They flourished like deeply rooted, fruit-bearing trees, secure on every side.
But because of their sin, they were displaced from that fertile land and taken elsewhere.
Though it may appear impossible, the Bible reveals that by the mercy of God, what was displaced can be restored. He does not just replant—He nourishes. He prepares the right atmosphere, provides what is needed, and makes every condition perfect so that the roots grow deep and bear fruit again.
What a promise!
This is deeply encouraging, especially when we feel lost, displaced, or misplaced in life. Like a dry stump that seems ready to be discarded, God can restore what appears useless and hopeless. He will replant you in your purpose. You will stand firm, unshakable, as your roots grow deeper in Him.
The dry season is not the end of your story—there is life even in your dryness.
You will once again grow upward and be fruitful in all your ways. Hold on to this promise—God is not finished with you.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the One who restores and replants our lives. Even when we feel displaced, lost, or dry, help us to trust in Your mercy and perfect plan. Strengthen our roots in You, and cause us to grow and bear fruit in every season. Breathe life into every barren place within us, and lead us into the purpose You have prepared. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
