“I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.”

Philippians 3:7 (NLT)

This Scripture captures the very essence of the cross.

Who we are, where we come from, and what we have accomplished—all of it fades into insignificance when compared to what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

Paul, the great apostle, was a Hebrew by birth, from the tribe of Benjamin—well educated, deeply religious, and a man of status and influence. He strictly followed the laws given by God through Moses. As a spiritual leader, he was exceedingly zealous for God, and his reputation was honored among his people.

Yet, in his zeal, he persecuted and killed men and women, believing he was serving God. On his way to continue this mission, he encountered Jesus—the Light that broke into his darkness. In that moment, everything changed. The revelation of the cross and the understanding that Jesus sacrificed His life for sinners like him completely transformed Paul’s life.

Paul’s story is not just history—it reflects a pattern we often see in our own lives.

When he came to know the truth, the truth set him free. As his heart repented, the Holy Spirit began to work within him, humbling him to the point where everything else lost its value.

There are many among us who have, or once had, these same “Paul-like” tendencies—placing confidence in our spiritual upbringing, being raised in a religious home, and faithfully following rules and disciplines. These things may gain respect from others who observe us outwardly.

But all rituals, observances of sacred days, and involvement in religious activities are of no eternal value if we fail to understand what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

The truth is that every one of us is a sinner, and through the finished work of the cross, we are reconciled to the Father.

The Bible reveals that this understanding comes only by the grace of God. We did not earn it, nor do we deserve it. It is a gift—that we are saved through His grace alone.

A life transformed by the true revelation of Christ is precious in the sight of God. It is not our background, but our relationship with Him that matters. Even if the world accuses you and considers you unworthy, the Father rejoices over you because you have chosen to walk in the knowledge of Christ.

So count it all joy when you face persecution, because you carry a revelation that surpasses everything this world can offer.

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”

Matthew 16:26 (ESV)

As you come into the knowledge of Christ, you too will declare that everything this world offers is unworthy compared to Him.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your grace and for revealing the truth of the cross to us. Humble our hearts so that we may value what truly matters. Help us not to rely on our own righteousness, but to rest in the finished work of Jesus. Deepen our relationship with You and strengthen us to stand firm in truth, even in the face of opposition. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
