“For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.”
Isaiah 54:10 ESV

Have you ever seen mountains depart or hills removed from the geography of the earth? It seems highly impossible and unrealistic that such a thing could happen. Yet even if something that unshakable were to move, the love of God will not depart from you, and His covenant of peace will not be removed.
What does this mean? It means God is so compassionate that He does not waver in His love for us. Our unfaithfulness is not an excuse for God to forsake us. His covenant with us does not depend on whether we remain faithful; He remains faithful to the covenant regardless. If anyone moves away from the relationship, it is us. Yet with open arms, He still waits for us to return and participate in that covenant.
To illustrate His love for His people, God called the prophet Hosea and asked him to marry a woman who was a prostitute and have children with her. Through this act, God revealed how His people had turned away from Him to worship other idols.
“When the Lord first began speaking to Israel through Hosea, he said to him, ‘Go and marry a prostitute, so that some of her children will be conceived in prostitution. This will illustrate how Israel has acted like a prostitute by turning against the Lord and worshiping other gods.’”
Hosea 1:2 NLT
Even in their unfaithfulness, God’s anger did not last forever. He expressed His enduring love and promised to redeem His people back into covenant relationship with Him.
To make this truth clear, God again told Hosea to love his wife, even after her adultery. This was another powerful illustration that no matter how unfaithful His people had been, God still loved them.
“Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go and love your wife again, even though she commits adultery with another lover. This will illustrate that the Lord still loves Israel, even though the people have turned to other gods and love to worship them.’”
Hosea 3:1 NLT
The Bible gives us a great revelation of how deeply God loves us. His love remains steadfast even when we are unfaithful. He gave His only begotten Son for us so that we could be redeemed and restored into covenant peace through the cross. His love will never give up on us.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your steadfast love that never departs and for Your covenant of peace that cannot be removed. Even when I am unfaithful, You remain faithful. Draw my heart back to You whenever I wander. Help me to live in the assurance of Your love and to remain rooted in Your covenant. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
